這本開始花開N朵，各錶N枝。總體是明暗交替。Aragon等捲入人族對抗魔道的正麵戰場，Rohan的昏君佞臣、Isengard的Ent大戰像戰國般精彩。Frodo（僞）馴服Gollum作嚮導不能更震驚。相比西邊的酣戰，Sam/Frodo與孤獨如影隨形。結尾兩章的華彩：（幾乎是）打破第四麵牆的對於神話、探險和自我選擇的討論，以及Sam的勇猛和抉擇。真正主角其實不是錶麵上的那幾個！
