可以說是平鋪直敘式的論述，文筆缺乏魅力。和Barbara Tuchman或是Dan Jones的文筆比較起來，可謂淡然無味。但是解釋大戰的發生卻非常稱職。都說曆史離得越遠，看得越清晰。這個說法對於一戰産生的原因卻不一定閤適，因為核心參與者都竭力消滅和自己有關的證據。誰都不想被指稱為打開潘多拉盒子的手。隻是近年來史學傢卻能夠從一些塵封的資料中找到新的證據。這本書得益於這些新浮齣水麵的資料，能夠提齣更加全麵的分析，也對主要參與者給齣瞭更加公平的評價。
