Like no other decade before or since, the 60s embodied the struggle against a jaded, reactionary establishment. As the Vietnam War dragged on, the protests grew in scale and intensity. Revolution ran riot, in the streets and on the silver screen. The movies of the epoch tell tales of rebellion and sexual liberation; and, above all, they show how women began to emancipate themselves from their traditional roles as housewives or sex bombs. While Jane Fonda, Anna Karina, Audrey Hepburn and Monica Vitti became the icons of a new, self-assured femininity, movies ranging from AHard Day's Night to Easy Rider celebrated youth, music and the thrill of freedom. A new generation of Young directors entered the scene. In France, the Nouvelle Vague proved that highly intelligent films could be made quickly and cheaply - a counterblast to the expensive and unweildy studio system. This was the decade of the great individualists, from Jean-Luc Godard and Michelangelo Antonioni to Arthur Penn and Jogn Frankenheimer: film-makers who have stamped their names on cinematic history.
