The Manyoshu is the great literary work of eighth-century Japan, a collection comprised of work from more than four hundred known contributors. Its spectacular richness and diversity--noble sentiments of those residing in the court found next to the rustic expressions of frontier guards stationed at lonely outposts--have made the Manyoshu an object of literary fascination for centuries. Ten Thousand Leaves is a selection of love poems from this magnificent anthology, selected and translated by world renowned scholar Harold Wright and complemented by spectacular period art.
For their simple beauty and power to communicate a constrained yet profound passion, the poems in Ten Thousand Leaves are unsurpassed.
"One of the world's great collections of poetry."--Donald Keene
"This book should invite many new readers to one of the world's truly great anthologies of poetry."--The American Oriental Society
