An impressionistic portrait of a bleak land, and wanderers, murderers, indians, revolutionists, and castaways who were there. For the author was spiritually one of them. The book is full of references, i may need to read it again.

讀著讀著，覺得英語是不可能自詡通達瞭，能寫好議論文足矣。The author walked such a tightrope between affectation and sublime......這書一多半就是靠文風瞭，諸多神來之筆，極不適閤翻譯。

布魯斯．查特文是一個傳奇式的人物。1940年齣生於英國謝菲爾德（Sheffield），曾是蘇富比最年輕的董事之一，後來辭去工作開始旅行。1972年，任職於《星期日時報》（The Sunday Times），三年後又突然離職，遠走世界的盡頭——巴塔哥尼亞，這趟長達六個月的自我放逐之旅，讓查特文完成瞭他的第一部作品——《巴塔哥尼亞高原上》。本書齣版至今受到無數讀者喜愛，其獨特的寫作風格，更獲得英國“豪森登奬”（Hawthornden Prize）及美國“佛斯特奬”（E. M. Forster Award of the American Academy of Arts and Letters）等文學大奬的肯定。

查特文於一九八九年一月去世，短短十餘年間，他陸續完成的作品包括小說、散文、旅行文學及攝影集等，其中較知名的包括：曾進入一九八八年“布剋奬”決選名單的《烏茲》（Utz），以及《歌之版圖》（The Songlines）。

逼着自己啃了下来。最开始被各种繁复的人名、地名、没有清晰标题的数字章节给绕得精疲力竭，三度放下，几乎要放弃。但是在坚持下，意外地发现了好多惊喜。比如巴塔哥尼亚高原名字的来历，比如，英旺达的制作过程，比如，用吸羊屁股的方式治疗羊藓的传说…… 这里面充斥着...

关注过查特文的Under the Sun：The Letters of Bruce Chatwin 。当然《巴塔哥尼亚高原上》是他最富盛名的代表作。不过，under the sun这部身后遗作的书信集读起来也非常有趣。8岁在寄宿学校写给父母的信中，就能看出这位日后以异域作为创作舞台的作家从小就对旅行充满渴望：“...

翻译得得太差了，以致于不得不怀疑是不是原著也很差。MD。奉劝不要买。而且有塑封的，在书店里也不好翻。后悔！

纪实？虚构?游记？人类学田野报告?都像是又都不确切。这本书太难归类啦。愈疗？流浪？远方?邂逅？陌生?心血来潮？幼年心结?这本书的关键词太多啦。不过，只用一个词汇形容的话，一准是“过目难忘”。
