原書實在太長，哪怕是企鵝齣的選本也還是太長瞭，蘭登書屋這本則庶幾可以滿足一下隻想管中窺豹之人的好奇心。很多十七世紀日常風俗因為日記體得到凸顯，譬如幾乎已被遺忘的dinner和supper之間的明確區彆、The New Exchange、當時的書價（Pepys本人也是買書如山倒）等等。還寫到查理二世為瞭在貴族中倡導節儉之風、或許也是為瞭一反當時流行的法國風尚，親自穿起“vest”，引領一時之風潮雲雲，還引起瞭法國宮廷之反撥，真是自古上行下效，莫不如此。關於1666年瘟疫以及倫敦大火也有不少有趣細節，還特彆記瞭筆當時書鋪受災之慘重。羅伯特·路易斯·史蒂文森的前言作為一篇誌人之作也頗可觀。
