History reveals that religion in general and Christianity in particular has retarded social and scientific progress and been the source of immeasurable woe. President Thomas Jefferson said as much when he wrote, "In every country and in every age, the priest has been hostile to liberty. He is always in alliance with the despot."
Instead of supporting the cause of human rights for all men, women, and children, which is the foundation on which true civilizations are based, Christian hierarchies have, with very few exceptions, supported powerful dictators; incited the passions of the bloody, church-enriching Crusades, Inquisition, and witch hunts; and promoted religious intolerance even in recent times. In contrast to these zealots, nonbelievers have never banded together in the name of atheism or humanism to torture or murder those who chose to support supernatural beliefs.
