Nick Cave這段從83年開始的西柏林生活是他人生中最混亂的歲月。

他有時候變得非常富有攻擊性，接受采訪時態度糟糕，極為抵觸媒體。

他還沒有找到與這個不那麼如意的外部世界取得平衡和交流的方法。

據Nick自己迴憶，是寫作小說《And The Ass Saw The Angel》（驢子見到天使，題目引自聖經）使他不至於崩潰。這部小說最終在1989年6月問世，先後被翻譯成10種語言。ELLE雜誌贊譽其為“現代史詩”。這本書最早的概念可以追溯到1984年Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds的單麯“Tupelo”。接下來一段時期的Nick歌麯創作的很大部分也可以被看作小說的平行綫（比如“The Carny”、“Your Funeral... My Trial”等歌）。該書由暗淡模糊的肖像和啓示錄般的辭章構成，在形式上清楚無誤地反映齣《聖經》對Nick Cave的藝術題材的深刻影響。小說描述瞭一個白癡罪犯被一個私刑狂人追殺的故事。
