《語法化的動因與機製》為《漢語語法化的曆程》(2001,北京大學齣版社)一書的姊妹篇。它集中反映瞭作者最近五年來在語法化領域的研究成果,討論的現象有處置式、被動式、工具式、疑問標記、感嘆標記、量詞、概念化與語法發展之關係、基本語序對一種語言的影響等。《語法化的動因與機製》的研究課題與前一本形成互補,大都是前一書沒有談及或者沒有充分展開論述的,因此兩書可以相互輝映,共同構成一個漢語語法化曆史的全貌。
