这本书值得评一评：1. Alpers基本是在以Greenblatt的新文化史和莎翁研究的方法和思路在写伦勃朗，对艺术家形象去浪漫主义和去理想化的论证可以说步履维艰且勇气可嘉，不令人信服之处是难免的（勇气也在于Alpers的性别，以及这本书里隐隐透出的女性主义反叛，性别上的冲突在Greenblatt这里是不存在的）；2.把这本书限制在社会艺术史的范围可能略狭隘，这本书可以说是在对艺术史最正典的画家开刀，企图开辟如今所谓的新艺术史，也直接影响了90年代往后基本比较出色的伦勃朗研究，Mieke Bal和Harry Berger首当其冲，但这两位都比Alpers啰嗦太多，反而没有Alpers讨人喜欢了：）

从宏观的对艺术史基本问题的把握到具体到作品细节的分析都非常值得推敲

这本Alpers看来写得比较顺手。让人一口气就能读下来，思路非常明晰。尤其喜欢她讲到伦勃朗油彩处理与伤残的那段。
