其实翻译的水平还是可以的，这本书也是英语史著作中最通俗的一本，David Crystal也推荐过。不过有点Anglo-saxon中心论。我更喜欢John Mcwhorter的野史版。  

对英国本土英语影响最大的，应该是爱尔兰的诗性传统与美国英语的形成。前者是无穷无尽的想象力，后者是无边无际的勇气。 诗人欧阳昱的译笔有翻译者少有的果断，对一些概括性、引领性词汇的翻译命名颇有趣味，也许此中的精神恰恰符合了英语自身的变化。  

见过自恋的，没见过像本书翻译如此自恋的，从头到尾一直在注释中发表高深的见解，什么“字典上如何如何翻译，我觉得不对”，“大家都翻译成****，但我觉得不好”之类的屁话。Singlish明明就是“新加坡英语”或“新加坡式的英语”，好像不翻译成“新格利系”就不能显示自己的翻...  

正如该书的前言所说，现在很多人都在学习英语，但是真正为英语而“英语”的人却并不多。换言之，更多的人是处于功利的态度来学习，而不是把英语当成个人的爱好，从语言学习中感受到各个文化之间的差异。 所以，很多人往往在学了N年的英语之后仍然不知英语究竟为何物，除了死记...
