The first of four tales by Baroness Orczy in this book is the most popular of all, "The Scarlet Pimpernel," has captured the interes of readers since it was written in 1905 about the Reign of Terror in France when hundreds, perhaps even thousands, of French citizens are sent to face the blade of Madame la Guillotine. With the cleverest of disguises, an Englishman and his league bravely outwith the Committee of Public Safety and its agent Chauvelin time-and-time again to struggle imperiled French citizens to the sactity of English soil.
The second tale, "In the Tiger's Den" is an exciting tale of the Scarlet Pimpernel as he meets death face-to-face in his quest to save more French citizens after hearing of the boast by "Papillon, sitting in state in the Taverne des Trois Rats, surrounded by an admiring crowd of citizens, gave it as his opinion that not the devil himself - so be it there was a devil - could spirit the aristos out of St. Arc."
The remaining two tales, "The Lure of the Chateay" and "El Dorado" are further adventures of the famous Pimpernel and his band of English rogues during their valiant quests.
