亚历山大·埃尔德，23岁那年，亚历山大·埃尔德在一艘轮船上当医生，当轮船行驶到非洲时，他跳离了轮船，前往美国，在纽约当了一名精神病医生。他先后做过杂志编辑、哥伦比亚大学教师。1976年夏天，他从纽约开车前往加利福尼亚。途中，他读完了一本恩格尔的《如何买股票》，竞被书中通过思考赚钱的想法深深吸引，从此自己的人生轨迹便改变了。而在此之前，他对股市一无所知。
