This is a fully revised and up-to-date edition of Ted Honderich's modern classic 'How Free Are You? The Determinism Problem'. In the first four chapters of this book, Honderich sets out a determinist philosophy of mind, in response to the question 'Is there a really clear, consistent and complete version of determinism?' and asks instead if there is such a clear version of free will. He goes on to address the question of whether determinism is true and finally what can we conclude about our lives if determinism is true? A long tradition of incompatibilist philosophers say we are not free and responsible. A tradition of compatibilists, at least as strong, say we are still free and responsible. We can make an affirmative response to determinism - but maybe that is not the very end of the story. You can have second thoughts, as the author has. Ted Honderich offers a concise and lively introduction to free will and the problem of determinism, as well as advancing the debate on this key area of moral philosophy. Essential reading for all those interested in the great philosophical problem of what it is to be 'free'.
