Barnes satirizes masculinity and domesticity by way of parable, poem, and play, and a prose style that echoes Chaucer, Shakespeare, the Bible, and Robert Burton s Anatomy of Melancholy. For this edition, several of Barnes s previously suppressed illustrations have been restored.
