评分研究美日關係的學者並不少，但是以一己之力覆蓋如此漫長時空、又能兼顧兩國視角的恐怕也就拉菲伯爾一人。史實豐富，視野廣闊，觀點新穎，參考文獻也很有價值，是一本值得一讀的名著。本書是班剋羅夫奬項當中有關日本題材的兩本著作的其中之一，另一本是約翰道兒的《擁抱戰敗》。
