About David Roberts
For hundreds of years, countless visual artists - from Rembrandt to Durer to Cecil B.DeMille - have drawn inspiration from the Holy Land, yet only few of them had ever seen these historical grounds with their own eyes. The distinguished Scottish artist David Roberts (1796-1864) had already achieved wide-spread fame as a scenic painter when he embarked on an extended journey to the Holy Land area. Arriving in Alexandria in September 1836, he described himself in his diaries as "the first artist who has ever set foot here". From Egypt, he travelled to the Sinai, Akaba, Hebron, Gaza, Jerysalem, The Dead Sea, Daalbek and many other sites steeped in biblical history. In May 1839, Roberts left the Orient with a treasure of drawings of amazing quality and depth, drawings which did remarkable justice to the splendid and awe-inspiring beauty of the Holy Land. Not surprisinly, he was admitted as a member of the presitigious Royal Academy of Arts some time later. In 1842, his pioneering art travels resulted in the first of a multi-volume deluxe edition, entitled The Holy Land, Syria, Idumea, Arabia & Nubia, with lithographs of his works. This monumental collection brought Roberts instant fame and success in Europe as well as in America. This Book of 30 Postcards contains a selection from Egypt, Nubia and The Holy Land.
