Aimee Bender (born June 28, 1969) is an American novelist and short story writer, known for her surreal plots and characters.
Bender received her undergraduate degree from the University of California at San Diego, and a Master of Fine Arts from the distinguished creative writing MFA program at University of California at Irvine. While at UCI she studied with Judith Grossman and Geoffrey Wolff. She currently teaches creative writing at the University of Southern California and heads a class in surrealist writing at the UCLA Extension Writers' Program. She has named Oscar Wilde, Hans Christian Andersen, the Brothers Grimm and Anne Sexton as influences on her writing. A native of Los Angeles, Bender is a close friend of fellow UCI alumni Alice Sebold.
A grief-stricken librarian decides to have sex with every man who enters her library. A half-mad, unbearably beautiful heiress follows a strange man home, seeking total sexual abandon: He only wants to watch game shows. A woman falls in love with a hunchback; when his deformity turns out to be a prosthesis, she leaves him. A wife whose husband has just returned from the war struggles with the heartrending question: Can she still love a man who has no lips?
Aimee Bender's stories portray a world twisted on its axis, a place of unconvention that resembles nothing so much as real life, in all its grotesque, beautiful glory. From the first line of each tale she lets us know she is telling a story, but the moral is never quite what we expect. Bender's prose is glorious: musical and colloquial, inimitable and heartrending.
Here are stories of men and women whose lives are shaped--and sometimes twisted--by the power of extraordinary desires, erotic and otherwise. The Girl in the Flammable Skirt is the debut of a major American writer.

Concise and simple languages, terse and fierce. Bizarre yet beautiful, there is a sense of coldness mixed carelessness. Is it about lust? Or about loss? I can’t tell, but it’s equally funny and sad.

评分以我个人口味来说是更喜欢Willful Creatures一点,不过这本也很意思,最喜欢Fugue,the ring,the healer这几篇。比之前看过的更怪异一些,不仅是在设定,还有人物性格语言方面。结局突然出现让人怅然若失,就是设定很不错,唉,要是扩写一下就更好了……
