伊迪丝·汉密尔顿（Edith Hamilton，1867—1963）出生于德国，生长于美国印第安纳，是美国当代著名的古典文学家及教育家。7岁时，汉密尔顿在父亲的指导下接触拉丁文，随后学习希腊文、法文、德文。她在慕尼黑大学研究古希腊罗马文学，毕业后，一生从事古典文学的教学、研究和写作。1922年，她工作退休，开始专职写作，63岁时出版第yi本著作《希腊精神》（1930），获得广泛赞誉。随后出版《罗马精神》（1932）、《以色列的先知们》（1936）、《希腊戏剧三种》（1937，译著）、《希腊文学的伟大时代》（1943）、《希腊罗马神话》（1942，被美国各学校广泛使用）、《真理的见证：基督和他的解释者》（1949）、《上帝的代言人》（1949）和《希腊的回声》（1957）等多部著作。获得多个荣誉学位与奖章，包括美国学院文艺奖（American Academy of Arts and Letters）等。1957年，90岁高龄的汉密尔顿被授予雅典荣誉市民，以肯定她在希腊神话及古典文学方面的贡献。
