玛格丽特·阿特伍德（Margaret Atwood）于1939年11月18日出生加拿大首都渥太华，在家排行老二，有一兄，一妹。父亲是森林植物学家，母亲毕业于多伦多大学，主修家政。阿特伍德七岁时，全家移居多伦多，父亲则任教多伦多大学。
