In the present volume, the holdings of the Walters Art Museum of scarabs from ancient Egypt and the ancient Near East are published for the first time. Although scarabs and other related objects from the minor arts field were well-known and appreciated, their systematic research began only in the last decades. The current stock of published scarabs and seals permit a much better understanding of their development, dating, and diversity of motifs. The mind boggling variety of scarabs in all their diverse aspects gives important information on, until now, unknown material, and will strengthen the scholarly judgment by detail.
