This first general history describes the changes in society over 600 years as Lan Xang was gradually dismembered and became a French colony. Most importantly, it shows the essence of the Lao and why, despite all that has happened, they possess their own social and cultural values that mark them as distinctive. Frequently at war, the course of their history was one of constant setbacks. In times of peace Lao society was enriched by the beauty of its art and the architecture of their new cities. Wars, however, brought destruction of the centres of learning. In this history, the authors show that despite this the richness of Lao cultural heritage still survives. Illustrated
