Area X has been cut off from the rest of the continent for decades. Nature has reclaimed the last vestiges of human civilization. The first expedition returned with reports of a pristine, Edenic landscape; the second expedition ended in mass suicide, the third expedition in a hail of gunfire as its members turned on one another. The members of the eleventh expedition returned as shadows of their former selves, and within weeks, all had died of cancer. In Annihilation, the first volume of Jeff VanderMeer's Southern Reach trilogy, we join the twelfth expedition.
The group is made up of four women: an anthropologist; a surveyor; a psychologist, the de facto leader; and our narrator, a biologist. Their mission is to map the terrain, record all observations of their surroundings and of one anotioner, and, above all, avoid being contaminated by Area X itself.
They arrive expecting the unexpected, and Area X delivers—they discover a massive topographic anomaly and life forms that surpass understanding—but it’s the surprises that came across the border with them and the secrets the expedition members are keeping from one another that change everything.

可能是中西方文化差异也可能是我水平有限，看完以后实在没觉得精彩在哪里，留下了一堆谜团，文中以生物学家为视角来写，大段大段的心理描写和个人独白，看的颇为乏味，自我感觉主剧情只占本书的20%，第一部很短，几小时就能看完，反正看完云里雾里，感觉自己看了小说的前言介绍...

Mysterious, obscure, scary, many loose ends...
评分从来没看过一本科幻小说写的如此美丽又极度恐怖。梦呓一般的描写，以及非常自省内向的生物学家主角。特别喜欢主角讲到自己喜欢看鹦鹉螺上面的几何图案，感到一种可以预测的熟悉，又感到一种下一秒就坠入未知的恐惧和晕眩。原来描写“寄蜉蝣于天地，渺沧海之一粟”可以有这么朝“里”看的展现方式。这样一本书，电影改编的不错，但是还是只能展示冰山一角。
