When a "correspondent from Missouri," wrote to Hugh Kenner and asked that he elaborate on his assertion that "Joyce began Ulysses in naturalism and ended it in parody," Kenner answered with this book. 薄薄一本，也是喬伊斯研究經典之一瞭吧。美中不足大概在於停留在瞭敘事分析。討論Ithaca一章認為是“Tell me, Muse”的問答式寫法，說起來每次我讀那章都覺得像是在讀公穀。句子寫的難看是真的，不知道是不是因為style這一necessary evil。A world where "words detect the gravitational field of the nearest person"，內外敘事聲音的二分。須重讀Moretti來看看喬伊斯在小說敘事譜係中的角色。討論喬伊斯與歷史/歷時性的部分沒有完全懂，繆斯與終章的Molly之間的等號也尚有不太清楚之處，此外“Objectivity”還真是個問題重重的詞啊，也不知道換一個說法會不會清晰些。
