In these four essays, written from 1947 to 1956, Sarraute compares the novelistic intentions of past writers to innovators of the New French Novel. Speaking with the authority of a practicing innovator, Sarraute considers a wide range of talented novelists, including Dostoevsky, Kafka, Proust, Woolf and Compton-Burnett, in order to trace the evolution of the novel, and envision its future. Keenly observing the dynamics between author and the reader, Sarraute, who sees the contemporary novel as a constantly evolving form, attempts to shatter traditional forms. Although Sarraute peels away the achievements of predecessors to find out what is new, she refuses to acknowledge any feeling of "having arrived." In the last pages, Sarraute salutes those writers who will, like herself, continue to "break away from all that is prescribed and conventional and dead, and turn toward what is free, sincere and alive..."

新小說兩大宣言式作品中較早的一部，但其實薩洛特的觀點和格裏耶顯然有所區彆。薩洛特認為對話是小說形式發展的方嚮，而這顯然不是格裏耶的觀點。對真實的看法是一樣的，這本裏區分瞭realist和formalist的作品，但和平常使用的習慣不同，薩洛特認為不惜拋棄舊有傳統尋找新手法也要錶現真實的作者是realist，所以新小說加自然也屬於這一類。薩洛特錶示現代作傢的書寫已經失敗，認為如今的作傢不願意進行心理的書寫，作傢和讀者都對錶現心理和心理本身充滿懷疑（thus the age of suspicion），而更願意由內轉外，通過描寫外在對話揭示內在而不是明確書寫。從“對話和潛對話”這篇來看，之前讀薩洛特小說中譯者還是引言作者對潛對話概念的解釋有些問題，不過也可能是薩洛特在其他作品中發展瞭這一概念。
