This collection covers the ancient theatre world of Sophocles and Euripides through the Medieval, Renaissance, Restoration, Enlightenment, Romantic, and modern periods. Included is a wider range of comedies than in most competing anthologies and a greater range of plays by women dramatists. Considerable translation, and a number of plays have been newly translated for the anthology. The editors provide annotations for each text together with an introduction discussing the literary and dramatic background of the play. They have also written general introductions to each section, and to the anthology as a whole.
