Anthony Clark's musical adaptation of Albert Lamorisse's fifties French film manages to keep its endearing innocence that stops sharply short of sentimentality. Pascal, a lonely little French boy, adopts a stray balloon with a mind of its own. The themes are a child's loneliness, his inability to make friends, the cruelty of other children and the uncomprehending and unsympathetic attitude of adults.
