保羅·約翰遜(1928一)。約翰遜畢業於牛津大學麥格德林學院，此後一直擔任《新政治傢》的編輯(至少在我們中國人看來，他是一個典型的知識分子)。他著作極豐，有20餘種，大都是政治和曆史作品，諸如《猶太人史》、《當代》(此書江蘇人民齣版杜將在2000年齣版)、《英國人民史》等，其中最著名、爭議也最多的就是他的《知識分子》一書。

作者自己總結說, 這個書的意圖是體現知識分子是多麼地不代錶大眾, 要大傢謹慎地對待知識分子的觀點什麼的... 講很多人的時候都(貶義地)提到說intellectual aristocracy... 但是我就喜歡intellectual aristocracy, 普通大眾就是什麼都不懂的嘛, 所以他黑bertrand russell黑得越厲害我就覺得russell越偉大(事實上我也很同意書中描述的russell那些intellectual aristocracy的態度)
