梅洛-庞蒂批评笛卡尔1笛卡尔的视觉模式乃是触觉，光线被理解为通过接触的作用，就像事物对于盲人手杖的作用一样；2不再有肖像的潜能，笛卡尔主义者不会在镜子里看见自己，笛卡尔主义者的铜版画不像客体而仅仅只是其表象，最终它只不过是墨渍（对比塞尚），视觉不再是事物双重隶属于大世界和一个私人小世界；3绘画只是思想的一种变形而不是通达存在之路的中心活动；4重视素描对于客体外壳的展示和表象/广延，忽视颜色对于客体本身的呈现/第二性质（对比塞尚）；5“我们确知具有感觉能力的是心灵而不是身体”（屈光学），虽然笛卡尔在第六节也描述了某种身体的不依赖于思想的自发活动；6笛卡尔认为文艺复兴时期的平面透视法能刺激我们的思想去寻找事物的真实形式，然而没有任何一种象征形式会永远作为刺激物起作用，世界在此之后继续运转。
