In this book, Raph Brauer argues that liberalism is based on what he terms 'four cornerstones': economic justice, educational equity, voting rights, and media fairness, and that liberal America has declined as these cornerstones have been undermined. Economic justice has been undermined by a widening gap between rich and poor; educational equity has suffered from attacks on the public schools system; voting rights have been undermined by electoral sharp practice; and media fairness is eroded by corporate control. Brauer argues that, as well as a Republican counterrevolution, liberalism has also suffered from the Democratic Party's failure to address the demands of excluded groups, such as women and people of colour. The author concludes that U.S. liberals need to place the four cornerstones back at the centre to their politics in order to counter the Republicans.
