Settled in 1633, Williamsburg was first known as Middle Plantation because it was located between the James and York rivers. In 1693, the nation's second-oldest institution of higher education, the College of William and Mary, was founded there. In 1699, the settlement became the capital of England's largest, richest colony, Virginia.
