While stories have a valuable role to play in children's emotional and mental development, their value can be diminished if educators are unaware of how and to what extent the children in their care understand the stories to which they are exposed. This book uses the results of psychological research to clarify for teachers what is now known about the ways in which children develop narrative competence in the first eight years of life, particularly around the age of three, thereby allowing early years practitioners to choose and use stories more effectively.
