Ever since Carl's dear dog Mooch died, his best friend Gary has been coming over with his puppy Dumpling to cheer Carl up. But Carl finally gets a little tired of Dumpling's constant sniffing, and arranges to spend some time alone working on his full-length biography of Mooch. When Gary's dad starts coming over as much as Gary himself did, however, Carl is forced to wonder whether he'll soon have a new father, a new brother, and a slightly annoying new dog. But as he thinks back on Mooch's life, he comes to see that not all change is necessarily for the worse. Life Without Mooch is an emotional story about one boy coming to terms with major changes in his life.
