In order to create this illustrated guide, architect John Baker designed a simple two-storey house with four bedrooms. He then developed the basic plan in multiple historical styles to reflect each one's essential characteristics, from the steeply-pitched roofs of the Early-New England Colonial (1650-1715) to the campaniles and shady balconies of the Italian Villa (1845-1875), to the environmentally-inspired "organic" lines of houses built during the Modern Movement (1920-1960), such as Wright's Falling Water. Baker begins each section with facts about the period, then cites the specific design details that characterize the style.
