It is the early 1960s and there isn't a mother in Charleston, Mississippi, who wouldn't like to have Reverend Theophilus Henry Simmons as her son-in-law. He's young, single, and oh-so-fine. But when he courts Essie Lee Lane and then decides to make her his First Lady, some of the church folk make it their mission to put her in her place. Theophilus's growing prominence coincides with Essie's evolution from a quiet parishioner to a confident, Christ-filled woman. In defiance of the congregation's expectations, Essie finally shows one and all what it means to stand by your man and your beliefs.
