Oeanographer Cindy Lee Van Dover
never thought that her childhood
curiosity would lead her to this
moment. But there she was, heading
toward the cold, dark depths of the ocean floor
She was piloting the famous Alvin, a tiny
research submarine known as a submersible.
The Alvin would collect data and gather
samples of rocks and delicate animals living
deep in the ocean. Scientists usually leave
the driving to trained submersible pilots.
But because Dr. Van Dover wanted the full
experience of exploring the ocean, she
became the first scientist ever to qualify
as a submersible pilot.
