Carl is crazy about Maggie, a new girl at his school. He used to hate going to class: now he wishes he could go on weekends, too. Maggie is tall, beautiful, kind, and best of all tough-she puts the bully Gary in his place, fast. But Mooch is jealous. Mooch is Carl's dear old dog, and when she hears Maggie's name she throws a tantrum, she chews Carl's slippers, tears at his bed. Mooch goes to the woods to sulk, and soon has a run-in with a frightened porcupine. When Maggie leaves for another school, Carl is faced with an angry bully and a sad old dog. But with a little timely help, he manages to cope. Mooch Gets Jealous is a story about a boy's divided loyalties, and what they teach him about himself.
