Ohio-born James Garfield, the last of the "Log Cabin" presidents, came from what was probably the poorest family of all the presidents. He has always been admired for climbing his way out of poverty to become a successful teacher, educator, preacher, Civil War hero, and national leader. It is hard to know what kind of president he would have been. Four months after he took office, he was assassinated by an emotionally disturbed man who was angry that he had been turned down for a government position.
