Brendys, the simple son of a Horsemaster, finds himself the inheritor of a great token of power and a destiny of which he wants no part . . . that of the Bearer of the Flame, prophesied harbinger of the Heir of Ascon, High King of Milhavior. Plagued by a curse, evil follows Brendys from his home in the small country of Shalkan to Gildea, a nation under siege by a dark power.
