A Strong wind blows through the grasslands at the base of the snow-capped Andes Mountains in Chilean Patagonia. Among these windy mountain peaks, herds of guanaco, wild ancestors of the domesticated llama, make their home. In spring, a newborn guanaco, or Chulengo, stands on unsteady legs by his mother's side and takes his first drink of warm milk. Soon Chulengo is strong enough to romp and dart through the dusty wild grasses. He jumps and neck-wrestles with other youngsters, preparing for the day when he will have to fight for his own territory. But Chulengo is still young and relies on his mother and father's protection and guidance. When a sly mountain lion creeps toward the herd, a warning scream from Chulengo's father sends Chulengo running for his life. Will he and the herd make it to the safety of a bluff in time?
