U.S. naval officer Commodore Matthew Perry journeyed to Japan in 1853-54 on behalf of the U.S. government. Perry's mission was to reestablish diplomatic and trade relations with the long-isolated Asian shogun, through force and intimidation if necessary. The American government hoped to exploit the riches of the Far East. Perry's mission was a success, and the United States became a leader in international trade.
