Fifteen-year-old Madolen leaves her drunken, gold-panning father to live with a kind Mormon familyat their ranch, far from her canyon. She is taught to read and write, but an accident forces her to leave the ranch and make her own way as a canyon guide. Her first job is guiding a rich young Easterner who is surveying the efforts of a mining operation in the canyons, and Madolen falls in love with the young man. But as a half-Navajo, will she be able to leave her beloved canyon and the ancient call of her mother's people?
