Durango Street tells the story of Rufus Henry's growth from a criminal gangster to a positive leader of his fellow teenagers. The novel starts as Rufus gets released from a juvenile detention center called Pine Valley. Henry has been incarcerated for stealing a car with a bunch of other boys. He gets out early for good behavior. One of the conditions of his parole is that Rufus must stay out of gangs.
