In "The Stream's Secret: The Symbolism of Dante Gabriel Rossetti", Rodger Drew offers an in-depth exploration of the symbolism employed by Dante Gabriel Rossetti in his painting and poetry, as well as the sources from which he was drawing. The work reveals that the painter was widely employing motifs and themes drawn from the European Hermetic magical system, which later developed into Rosicrucianism and Freemasonry. Drew actually connects the Symbolism used by Rossetti to a comprehensive European tradition dating back to Plato and Pythagoras. This authoritative study, developed out of the author's PhD thesis represents a facet of Art History, which has not been hitherto explored and that is of fundamental importance for a better understanding of 19th century Art.
