Being an in-law can be difficult, as women are anxious that they will be seen as a 'bad' in-law. Mothers-in-law worry that they may be exhibiting those very same behaviours that we loathe in the stereotypical mother-in-law: that they are intrusive, domineering, or unkind to their daughters-in-law. Daughters-in-law worry, but to a lesser degree, that they may not include their husband's mother often enough or successfully overlook her faults. This book is based on intensive interviews with fifty-three daughters-in-law and a subset of their mothers-in-law, and examines the range of in-law relationships. It addresses both the formidable and delicate issues of in-law relationships and systematically examines the nature of the bond. In so doing, this book dispels many of the myths surrounding in-law relationships, to show the positive nature of many of these relationships, which overturns the popular stereotype.
