Scheper Hughes basically got kicked out by a whole village of people because of this book. What intrigued me more than the psychiatric conditions in remote Irish villages is the ongoing debate on knowledge vs ethics in the anthropological field. Would strongly recommend 'Ire in Ireland' (also by Scheper-Hughes) as follow-up reading.

好像这本书所引发的伦理思考比研究发现更重要，NSH在前言里不无讽刺地说，她因为写了本普通人能读得懂的民族志而拿了Mead奖，但正因为普通人能读得懂，所以她的研究对象读到了这本书，而对书里内容大为光火，他们在NSH做田调时那么帮她，结果NSH却把他们更丑陋、更黑暗的那面曝光给了全世界，所以写民族志究竟该为了谁好？

Nancy Scheper-Hughes is Professor in the Department of Anthropology and Director of the doctoral program in Medical Anthropology at the University of California, Berkeley.
