South African novelist, short-story writer and essayist, Olive Schreiner (1855-1920) was a central and controversial figure in the development of modern, white South African literature. Focusing on the key late 19th-century discourses of feminism, prostitution, colonialism, science and evolution, this is the first study to explore, in depth, Schreiner's achievement as a writer.
