In 1972, three great railroads - Chesapeake and Ohio, Baltimore and Ohio, and Western Maryland joined together as the Chessie system. Their Diesel engines were repainted brilliant blue and yellow, with Chessie the Sleeping Kitten as a mascot in vermillion. Unique in rail history, the Chessie system was a railroad operation that combined tradition and innovation to a remarkable degree. The railroads origins are traced from the first affiliation in the 1960's to securing routes in the Midwest and Northeast a decade later. There is also a detailed working of the Chessie system itself: operating divisions, major facilities, diesel fleet, technological advances, and intermodal operations - all the assets that characterized it's reign until its integration into the vast CSX system in 1987.
