Time-out is a great way to handle misbehavior--but sometimes it doesn't do the job. When you feel frustrated, angry, helpless or scared because this traditional discipline tool doesn't work, you need to add Time-In. Designed to prevent problems by teaching children to think, to be competent and to succeed, Time-In recommends four tools that fit together like puzzle pieces. "Ask, " "act, " "attend" and "amend" are versatile enough to help you handle any behavior in children between the ages of one and 12. Some problems will be solved with one of these "pieces, " while others will require three or four. You can use "Time-in" when you want your children to: Listen and think (the parent asks); -Change their behavior in a positive way (the parent acts); -Pay attention to what they or others need (the parent attends); and-Correct something they've done wrong (the child amends).
