Twenty-four epic poems mirror the heroism of the common soldiers on both sides of the Crimean War. They also lament the gigantic loss of life at Sevastopol and illustrate the lack of supplies, the appalling field hospitals, and the mendacity of the politicians. Above all they recapture the drama and excitement of a time of the Czar of Russia described as like being "wrapped in whirlwinds."
